THE BEAUTY EDIT
MELASMA
Melasma can be persistent and frustrating, especially when pigmentation returns after improvement. At The Beauty Edit, we take a careful, personalised approach, starting with your skin’s history and the factors that may be contributing.
MELASMA
& PATCHY PIGMENTATION
Melasma is a pigmentation condition that develops when pigment-producing cells become overactive, creating flat patches darker than your natural skin tone. It commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip, often appearing on both sides of the face.
Its development is complex, with genetics, hormonal influences and light exposure all playing a role. Pregnancy and hormonal medications can contribute in some people, while sunlight and visible light can worsen existing pigmentation. Irritating skincare or unsuitable procedures may also aggravate the condition.
At The Beauty Edit, we understand that melasma requires ongoing management. Our approach focuses on appropriate homecare, consistent sun protection and carefully selected treatments, with medical input where needed.

Melasma typically appears as irregular brown or grey-brown patches across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose or chin. Patches often develop on both sides of the face and may become more noticeable after sun exposure.
Melasma usually changes the skin’s colour without causing raised areas, pain or itching. Because other conditions can resemble it, medical assessment may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Your consultation covers your pigmentation history, hormonal factors, medications, skincare and previous treatments. We discuss sun protection and assess whether your skin needs preparation before any procedure.
A tailored Lira Clinical routine will form part of your homecare plan. Where appropriate, our in-house doctor or a dermatologist may assess whether prescription care is needed alongside your clinic treatments.
We take a cautious approach: procedures that irritate the skin can worsen melasma, so treatment selection and timing matter.
-
Our treatment options support different stages of your melasma journey, from treating to on-going management. Following a thorough consultation, we’ll recommend suitable options and explain how they fit into your personalised plan.
Your program will often begin with a recommended Lira Clinical Core Four skincare routine. Consistent homecare forms the foundation of your plan, supporting your skin between appointments and helping prepare it for more advanced corrective peels where appropriate. What you do at home plays an important role in your progress, with in-clinic treatments providing targeted support.
Depending on your skin’s needs, your plan may include a combination of Lira Clinical medical melasma corrective peels, Sylfirm X RF microneedling, and/or MelaKlear. We’ll select and sequence treatments according to your melasma, sensitivity and how your skin responds.
